Strategies 2007-2009
STRATEGY I:
WE WILL PUT IN PLACE DIVERSE CURRICULUM AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES
THAT MEET THE NEEDS AND ASPIRATIONS OF EACH STUDENT
- Develop and assess a coherent and aligned secondary curriculum that
prepares all students for post-secondary education and/or the career of their choice,
in cooperation with elementary and post-secondary institutions.
- Explicitly teach and assess, across the curriculum, a common set of:
Higher-Order Thinking Skills.
21st Century Work Force Readiness Skills.
Habits of Mind.
- Expand career pathway opportunities (career exploration in middle schools) at all
school sites.
- Connect all students to flexible career pathway opportunities (career exploration
in middle schools).
- Design and implement a district-wide data management system that informs and
guides the curriculum and classroom instructional decisions in a timely manner.
- Increase student engagement in rigorous, standards-based learning activities by
providing relevant, real world classroom experiences in the core curriculum.
Note: Embedded in the standards are a common set of skills (See Result #2).
- Implement and monitor a systematic approach to mastery learning of content standards
that differentiates curriculum and classroom instruction based on student needs.
STRATEGY II:
WE WILL DEVELOP THE CHARACTER OF EACH STUDENT WITH EMPHASIS ON CREATING A SENSE
OF EMPOWERMENT AND A COMMITMENT TO PARTICIPATION IN SOCIETY.
- Students will participate in a school wide character education program.
Teachers will participate in training for character education for students.
- All students will provide evidence of service learning.
- Students will engage in activities that will create a powerful connection to the school.
- Students will be recognized for demonstrating specific character traits.
STRATEGY III:
WE WILL ENSURE EXEMPLARY STAFF TO ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION AND OBJECTIVES.
- Establish a standards-based evaluation system focused on continuous growth
for all employees.
- Recruit, hire and RETAIN exemplary employees.
- Ensure continuous professional growth for all employees through coaching and
collaboration.
- Create and maintain a culture of professionalism that promotes a positive environment.
STRATEGY IV:
WE WILL ENSURE EFFECTIVE FAMILY INVOLVEMENT IN THE EDUCATION OF ALL STUDENTS.
- Implement an effective parent involvement program at each school site.
- Institute a school-wide protocol that ensures a positive and welcoming environment
for parents.
- Increase effective relationships between school and home by utilizing diverse modes
of communication.
- Develop and provide parent education programs to support student success.
- Increase opportunities for parents to participate in the decision making process of the
school.
STRATEGY V:
WE WILL CREATE SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS TO ENSURE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
AND WELL-BEING.
- Establish a career office/center at each middle school and high school, to support students
in succeeding in the career of their choice.
- Create a Newcomers' Center for ELD Level 1-2, 9-12 grade students who are new to the
school district.
- Implement a district supported database that provides a system for accessing student data
including diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, interventions provided and a
means to monitor student progress.
- Establish a district-wide RTI (Response to Intervention) process to identify at-risk students
and monitor their response to a tiered system of research-based interventions. "At-risk" is
defined as a student who is in danger of not fulfilling his/her promise.
- Provide peer mentoring and mediation on an as needed basis.
- Provide structured time within the school day to provide academic and social support for
all students based on their level of need.
STRATEGY VI:
WE WILL ESTABLISH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATION THAT INCLUDE ALL
STAKEHOLDERS.
- Utilize an automated phone system at all sites to maintain contact with parents, students
and staff.
- Implement a universal web template that is maintained at each site, interactive and accessible
to all stakeholders.
- Select a state-of-the-art web-based service (eg. Edline, School Loop) through which students,
parents and teachers can exchange important information about student progress.
- Accommodate stakeholders' work schedules by increasing access to personnel,
technology and information.
- Establish protocols that allow stakeholders to provide input in order to ensure two-way
communication.
STRATEGY VII:
WE WILL ENSURE EXEMPLARY LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT.
- Every learning environment will comply with District-wide standards for Technology, Facilities
and Safety.
- Every learning environment will be fully equipped with the resources necessary to maximize
learning.
- Every District facility will be operationally and functionally maintained, clean and safe and
environmentally functional. Space will be adequate to maximize learning, with considerations
for ergonomics, up-to-date technology available for all, aesthetics and functionality for
flexibility/change over time.
- Every learning environment will be SAFE.
STRATEGY VIII:
WE WILL ENGAGE IN EFFECTIVE COLLABORATION WITH ALL COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND WITHIN
THE DISTRICT TO ACCOMPLISH OUR MISSION AND OBJECTIVES.
- Strengthen and facilitate two-way community involvement and communications.
- Reform Community Service Promotion/Graduation Requirement to develop a spirit of
community giving.
- Secure viable and sustainable resources to accomplish community collaboration and
involvement for all stakeholders.
- Implement ongoing "vertical teaming" between colleges, universities, district and schools
through coordination with the Community Partnership Office and the Office of Post-Secondary
Initiatives.
- Establish and implement for all students an Academic Career/Work Plan that guarantees
academic rigor and embeds vocational career pathways.
STRATEGY IX:
WE WILL ORGANIZE THE DISTRICT STRATEGICALLY FOCUSING ALL RESOURCES ON STUDENT LEARNING
AND SUCCESS.
- Increase student attendance (ADA) to 100%.
- Maintain student attendance at 100%.
- Develop and disseminate, in a variety of formats, a district organizational chart that
demonstrates a clear and direct relationship between achievement and district personnel.
- Reorganize the Grants and Communications Department to:
maximize the effectiveness and expertise of its staff,
develop a communication system that promotes direct channels of information
and technical assistance that supports teaching and learning,
enhance the reporting of the district's progress in accomplishing its mission and
highlighting best practices and achievements at school sites.
- Explore a system for Student-based Budgeting that provides a comprehensive distribution
process of all resources based on the specific needs of every student at each school site.
- Involve all stakeholders in building consensus for transition to implementation of a Student-based
Budgeting System.
- Implement Student-based Budgeting in the SUHSD.
- Establish interdependent relationships between and within sites and the district.
STRATEGY X:
WE WILL EXPLORE THE ROLE OF THE ADULT PROGRAM AS A SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR THE SECONDARY
SCHOOL PROGRAMS MISSION AND OBJECTIVES.
- Institute an effective method of communication and collaboration between 7-12, ROP and Adult Education
program staff and administration to support the secondary education programs.
- Institute a district-wide professional development pathway for secondary and adult school staff.
- Institute a district-wide parent education pathway between 7-12 and adult school programs for educational
opportunities for parenting and academic preparation for parents to support the secondary students.
- Institute a district-wide community partnership pathway between 7-12, ROP, and Adult Education staff and
community agencies in order to strengthen existing, and identify new, resources for career/vocational/social/health/
family student support.
- Institute district-wide career and academic pathways for the 7-12, ROP, and Adult Education
programs for students to successfully chart their career and academic pursuits of choice and
accomplish their life goals.
