District Adding Bus Stops (Posted, July 26, 2012)

At the start of the budget process in March 2012, the district needed to close a $27 million deficit. Among the cost-saving measures adopted was an increase in the walking distance to qualify for bus service by half a mile in order to save $800,000, the equivalent of 10 percent of the $8 million annual transportation budget.

A total of 4,000 students (approximately 10 percent of enrolled students) are bus riders at an average annual cost of $2,000 per student. Starting Monday, July 30, we will be adding six bus drivers and a number of temporary bus stops to serve the bus routes most impacted by the changes in service.

Transportation is working on identifying those added stops now. A list of those temporary stops is now available here. These stops are temporary. With the addition of six drivers, the transportation office is working to create a roster of new bus routes. Those new routes will be finalized and posted on the transportation website by the end of the day next Friday, August 3.

Beginning Monday, Aug. 6, the transportation office will begin selling bus passes for the added routes and empty bus seats on existing routes.
