After being called to active duty with the military in Iraq in 2009 John McCann returned home to his family and ran for the Sweetwater School Board Seat #3. In 2010, John McCann was overwhelmingly elected to the SUHSD Board in November 2010 with an over 15 point margin of victory. After serving eight years on the Chula Vista City Council, he was sworn in as Sweetwater District Trustee in December 2010. An independent leader, John McCann as a parent himself is committed to be the voice of parents and students and is working for Academic Excellence, Fiscal Responsibility and Resources for our Classrooms.
John McCann grew up in the South Bay and attended all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade at local public schools and attended Junior High School and High School in the Sweetwater District. John McCann's father is a Vietnam Veteran and served 28 years in the Navy. John McCann's mother worked for Rohr Industries/Goodrich Aerospace for over 25 years. John McCann's grandfather served proudly in the Navy during World War II. John McCann in that tradition of service currently serves as Navy Reservist and is an Iraq War veteran recently returning from a tour in Mosul, Iraq in 2009.
John McCann received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from San Diego State University and received a Center for Public Economics scholarship in his senior year. After college John McCann worked in the Financial Industry working closely with individuals and small businesses. During this time, John finished his Master's Degree in Economics.
After receiving his Master's Degree, John McCann then changed his career focus and moved into the technology industry. John served in several supervisory and management positions for technology companies and continues to work as a businessman in the technology field.
Working in the technology industry, John McCann saw the changing economy and decided he could give back to the community by teaching computers in the evening. He attended weekend classes at the University of California, San Diego, and received his Adult School teaching credential. He taught at several adult schools in the Sweetwater District and taught part-time at Southwestern College.
John McCann is an outstanding community volunteer. John McCann has served as a board member for several non-profit organizations including the South Bay YMCA, the Boys & Girls Club, AYSO soccer and Bonitafest committee. He is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Chula Vista and Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce. John has served on the Planning Commission, Economic Strategy Committee, Housing Advisory Commission and Beautification Committee for the City of Chula Vista. John McCann has helped raise money for Children's Hospital and Ovarian Cancer Research.
John McCann and his wife, Myssie, live in Chula Vista with their four children and their Labrador. All four of their children attend public schools. Myssie, a fourth-generation South Bay resident, served several years as the treasurer of the Children's Hospital Auxiliary Bonita Unit, and was a member of the Chula Vista Child Care Commission. In their spare time, John, Myssie, and their children enjoy the outdoors, being involved with their Church, spending time with friends and family, and watching soccer and Charger's football
