Bertha López was elected to the Sweetwater Union High School District Board of Trustees in 2008 after 10 successful years as a board member for the Chula Vista Elementary School District. A life-long educator, Ms. López supports and understands the challenges our incoming students face on a daily basis, as she is currently a reading-language arts specialist for the National School District.
Ms. López has been a tireless advocate for students, especially students with linguistic needs. Her passion for these students has earned her leadership roles in the California and National Association of Bilingual Educators, the Association of Mexican American Educators, the California School Boards Association and LULAC. She currently is a member of the Latino County Superintendent's Advisory Board.
An alumni of UCSD, Ms. López was recently appointed to the University of California, San Diego Board of Overseers, an advisory committee to Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. This allows Ms. Lopez to support higher education and be an advocate for our students. She is also the recipient of the Tribute to Women in Industry award from the YWCA.
A Chula Vista resident, Bertha and her husband, Jose, have a son who attends Bonita Vista High School.
