Sweetwater Schools Showing Continued Gains in State Test Scores - 08/31/11

Newly released data shows improvement across district

Sweetwater District schools continue to make significant gains in newly released 2011 Academic Performance Index (API) scores. As a district, Sweetwater made a 25 point gain, increasing to 785. In addition, 11 schools now have scores above 800, the state's academic performance target.

Sweetwater schools also showed significant gains among English learners, African Americans, Latinos and economically disadvantaged students.

Based on the API, all 12 comprehensive high schools and all 11 district middle schools scored increases to exceed the student achievement goals set by the state.

"We are very excited for the continued level of high student achievement in the Sweetwater District," said School Board President John McCann. "The teachers in this district have worked hard and their efforts have paid off."

While all schools showed improvement, six schools scored above 800 for the first time - Bonita Vista Middle, Granger Junior High, Hilltop Middle, National City Middle, Otay Ranch High and Sweetwater High.

Sweetwater High School had the largest increase, going from 733 in 2010, to 805 in 2011 - an increase of 72 points. Other schools with significant gains were Mar Vista High with a 41 point gain, Mar Vista Middle with a 39 point gain and National City Middle with a 34 point gain.

"These continued gains show that we are working hard as a team and achieving great things," said Acting Superintendent Ed Brand. "We are very proud of our students and know that they will continue to outperform themselves in the years to come."
