New District Board Officers Named

Sweetwater Board of Trustees selects new president and vice president

At their recent meeting, the Sweetwater Board of Trustees selected John McCann as President and Pearl Quiñones as Vice President. Continuing their roles, Superintendent Dr. Jesus Gandara will serve as Secretary and Sandi Smith will serve as the Clerk of the board.

McCann is the newest member of the Board of Trustees, elected in November, 2010. He is a former two-term councilmember of the City of Chula Vista and attended district schools, graduating from Bonita Vista High.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics at San Diego State University and works as an independent businessman. McCann is also a member of the U.S. Naval reserves. This past summer, he returned from a year-long tour of duty in Iraq where he worked at Forward Operating Base Diamondback writing supply contracts.

Quiñones was first elected to the Sweetwater Board in 2000. She retired as an Outreach Consultant for the San Ysidro School District, working with at-risk students to help prevent them from dropping out of school. She has served in several leadership capacities, including the National Association of Latino Elected Officials.

She is a fellow of the HOPE Leadership Institute and past vice president of the California Latino School Board Members Association. Quiñones has a bachelor's degree in political science from San Diego State University and a master's degree in public administration from San Diego State University.
