GED PROGRAM INFORMATION

What is the GED?

The GED is the equivalent of a high school diploma for people who did not finish high school. The letters "GED" stand for General Education Development or Graduate Equivalency Diploma.

Why do I need a GED?

It is very hard to get a job without a high school degree or a GED. People who have a GED or high school diploma make more money than those who don't.

Will the GED help me get into college?

Almost all colleges accept GED graduates just like high school graduates. If you have your GED you can apply for federal financial aid to pay for college.

What is the GED test like?

  • Is it hard to pass the GED? It depends on how long you stayed in school, how well you can read and do math, your ability to think critically, and how much you study for the test.
  • To pass the GED, you need to be able to read and understand some basic things, such as a newspaper or a job application. You also have to be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide without using a calculator.

  • Do I need to know everything I learned in high school? No. The GED tests how well you think about different issues based on your life experiences. So even if you have been out of school for a long time, you can pass this test if you study for it.
What subjects are on the GED Test?

The five subjects are writing, math, social studies, science, and reading. You can take the tests one at a time and once you have passed all five tests and met the average required you will receive your GED.

What are the GED preparation classes like?

Your GED teacher will give you pre-tests and advise you when you are ready to sign-up to take the official tests. You can work at your own pace to prepare for the tests. The teacher will provide a plan for you with what you will need to do to pass the five tests and will be there to assist you as you go along. There is a math lecture available for students who attend in the morning.

Is there a fee for the official GED test?

Yes, the test costs $70.00 which includes all five subject tests and the certificate but you don’t pay until you are ready to take tests. The preparation classes offered here are free. If you prefer, you can pay for the tests one at a time.

Is there a graduation?

Yes, the GED and High School Diploma graduates from all four adult schools have a large graduation at Southwestern College in June of each year. Graduates wear caps and gowns and can invite as many people as they like to attend. Scholarships are available to those who are going to continue their education. They are given at an Awards Ceremony preceding graduation each year.

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRAM INFORMATION

How can I finish my High School Diploma?

Adult School offers a High School Diploma program that allows you to complete the classes that you did not finish when you were in High School. To begin you will need a transcript that lists the classes you have taken and the grades you received so that we can give you credit for them. If you don’t have a transcript we can request one for you.

What are the requirements to graduate?

42 credits are required
– 8 English
– 6 Social Studies
– 4 Mathematics (including Algebra 1 & 2)
– 4 Science (2 Life Science/2 Physical Science)
– 2 Foreign Language or Visual/Performing Arts
– 18 electives
– Computer Literacy
– The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will be a graduation requirement starting in September 2005

What are the High School Diploma classes like?

Students complete work in class in individualized instruction programs. Teachers are available to answer all questions and to help you stay on track.

What is required to complete a credit?

Specific tests and/or academic requirements must be completed and passed. Approximately 60 hour of actual class attendance is required. Classes can be completed within 3 to 6 weeks.

Will the classes I took in a foreign country count towards my diploma?

Grades from a school outside of the United States may count. Students need to bring in their school records that list the classes that they completed and the grade that was received.

I don’t have time to come to school every day. Can I study at home?

Yes. We have an Independent Studies program that allows you to do the work at home. You will be scheduled to meet with a teacher once a week to review your work, answer questions and to take exams.

Can I get high school diploma credits for taking GED tests?

Yes, many students choose to take GED tests to satisfy some of the 42 required and elective credits needed to complete the diploma. You still receive a high school diploma.

How can I complete 18 elective credits?

You can receive credit for work experience, household management, GED tests, college credits, military service, etc.
