Purpose: Title I, Part A federal funds help to meet the educational needs of low-achieving students in California's highest-poverty schools. Funds are used to support effective, research-based educational strategies that close the achievement gap between high-and low-performing students and enable the students to meet the state's challenging academic standards. Title I-funded schools are either targeted assistance schools or schoolwide program schools.

Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting
Purpose: To increase student academic achievement through strategies such as improving teacher and principal quality and increasing the number of highly qualified teachers in the classroom and highly qualified principals and assistant principals in schools. This includes class size reduction funding.

Language Instruction for Limited-English-Proficient (LEP) Students
Purpose: To provide supplementary programs and services to assist LEP and immigrant students in achieving grade-level and graduation standards, as well as assisting LEP students with acquiring English.

Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities
Purpose: A federal program providing funding to local educational agencies to prevent violence in and around schools; to prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs among youth; and to foster a safe and drug-free learning environment.
